East Liverpool hires new superintendent

Dr. Melissa Watson, new East Liverpool superintendent

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (WKBN) — The East Liverpool City Schools Board of Education hired a Warren City Schools administrator as its new superintendent during a special meeting Thursday.

Dr. Melissa Watson is currently the Teaching and Learning Director at Warren City Schools. She was a principal for the Warren schools before serving as a curriculum director for the Trumbull County Educational Service Center.

She will begin working for East Liverpool schools as acting superintendent on July 1 and will officially assume the superintendent’s post Aug. 1, according to a news release from the school district. Superintendent James Herring’s resignation becomes effective July 31, but he will use vacation time for the month of July.

Watson’s three-year contract with the city school district includes a $100,000 annual salary the first year, increasing to $101,000 and then to $102,000 the next two years.

The Board of Education began the search in March by meeting with the Columbiana County Educational Service Center (CCESC) to prioritize the needs of the district and to identify criteria needed in the next leader of the district. Watson was chosen from among nine candidates.

Watson graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1992 and earned her master’s degree in 1999 from Cleveland State University. She earned her doctorate from Youngstown State University in 2012.

The board said in its release that it hired Watson because of her strong background in education and curriculum.

She said she plans to commute from her home in Warren.
