Warren youth group plans on debating lawmakers

WARREN, Ohio — Some local teens are preparing for a fight in Columbus next week as they take on legislators over issues affecting them.

Students with the Inspiring Minds program in Warren did a mock debate this morning over “skype” with a member of State Representative Sean O’Brien’s office.

The group is divided into four teams and plan to debate lawmakers in the State house on the issues of Banning junk foods in school and having school all year round.

The kids leave for Columbus this Wednesday.

“We are trying to teach the kids about what a debate is. How to fight for your cause and kind of be responsible voting the whole aspect,” said Deryck Toles, Executive Director of the Inspiring Minds program.

“It’s very exciting you get an opportunity because most kids probably would not get the opportunity to do that so,” said Raionna Talbert, of Warren.

Inspiring Minds is an after school program in Warren that prepares youth for college and life after high school.
