Kids getting into Gear in Youngstown

GEARS program hosts block party in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A local group is hoping to get area kids in gear this summer — literally.

This afternoon a kickoff block party was held on the South Side to launch the GEARS program.

GEARS — which stands for Generating Energy, Activity, Recreational Fun and Safety — is designed to give area kids something to do this summer

“Most of them, all they know is, walking around, playing videos. They talk about obesity, well they need something to help them lose weight other than taking food away from them. They need activity. They need to that energy out,’’ said Jackie Menton, of Youngstown.

And while the kids were having fun today, Menton said next year’s program should be even better.

Area kids something to do this summer beside just sitting around or wandering the streets.

And that — according to organizers — is something lacking in
the city.
