Pa. police: Tree falls on car, killing 2 kids

JEROME, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in western Pennsylvania say two children were killed in what police are calling a “freak accident” when a tree fell on a car.

Police in Somerset County told The (Somerset) Daily American that the car was heading south on Route 403 in Conemaugh Township when the falling tree hit the back of the car shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Coroner Wallace Miller said two of the four children in the back seat were killed by blunt force trauma. Police said two adults and the other two children were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where their condition was unavailable.

Police chief Louis Barclay said an accident reconstruction determined that the tree was rotted at the base. He said “All indications are it was just a freak accident.”
