Ohio delays new requirements for jobless benefits

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The state is temporarily delaying the enforcement of new regulations that require Ohioans to do more to get unemployment benefits, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Wednesday.

People seeking jobless benefits have had trouble with their passwords when trying to update their online resumes as required through the state’s job-search website, OhioMeansJobs.com.

Problems arose when users could not distinguish between certain letters and numbers contained in their passwords, said the state’s Job and Family Services spokeswoman Angela Terez. For instance, zeroes looked similar to the letter “O.”

Claimants then called customer service representatives who could not access the passwords or reset them because of strict security protocols.

Terez said the state is working to resolve the problem, and beneficiaries can now get password help from customer service if needed.

In the meantime, claimants’ jobless benefits will not be suspended because of the issue, she said.

Ohio’s new requirements for unemployment compensation took effect in April.

The state posts basic resumes for people when they apply for unemployment benefits. They then have eight weeks to create a detailed online resume for potential employers to find. By week 14, claimants must complete tests for math, reading and locating information to help identify careers that match their skills. At week 20, they are required to finish a questionnaire to determine what work best suit them.

If individuals don’t meet the requirement by the deadline, their unemployment benefits will stop until the activity is completed.
