Hummer takes out headstones in cemetery

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol cited a man for failure to control his vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt after he crashed his hummer into a cemetery Thursday in Liberty Township, wrecking some gravestones.

Emergency workers took Raymond Lewis Jr., 58, of Girard, to St. Elizabeth Health Center  for observation following the single-vehicle crash in Liberty Thursday afternoon.

Girard, was driving a Hummer east on Churchill Road when he hit a guardrail and went through the fence of Church Hill Cemetery, near the intersection of Belmont Avenue.

The vehicle took out at least eight headstones before coming to a stop. The crash happened about 3 p.m.

The cemetery is owned by Liberty, and the township’s road superintendent is responsible for its upkeep. Lewis’ insurance company would be responsible for paying for the repairs.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Lewis claims he had a medical condition and must therefore be retested for his drivers license.
