Austintown teacher to appeal firing for inappropriate student relations

Dietz fired

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Austintown school board approved the firing of Austintown Fitch social studies teacher John Dietz Friday, citing “inappropriate touching of female students,” and excessive personal interaction.

Dietz has told the board that he will challenge his firing through aribitration.

“The Board does not plan to make any further media statements regarding the matter until the arbitration process is complete,” according to a statement issued by the board Friday.

One of the allegations against Dietz involves photos in which, “his hands appear to be on or near the female student’s stomach, leg and buttocks regions,” according to the board’s resolution to fire Dietz. Austintown Local Schools Superintendent Vincent Colaluca said the district did turn the case over to Austintown police and the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Professional Conduct.

Austintown Police Sgt. Kathy Dina relayed, through APD Capt. Bryan Kloss, that the case had been closed more than two weeks ago. No charges were filed because police found no criminal misconduct in the case, she said.
