Ohio man sentenced to life in toddler’s slaying

JEFFERSON, Ohio (AP) – A 26-year-old northeast Ohio man who pleaded guilty to raping and killing his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter has been sentenced to life in prison.

Joshua Million of Conneaut, northeast of Cleveland, agreed to plead guilty to avoid a possible death penalty if he was convicted at trial. He’ll have no chance for parole.

Ashtabula County Prosecutor Nicholas Iarocci said the plea agreement was the idea of the family of the victim, Melanie “Lanie” Powell. He said the family needed closure.

The (Ashtabula) Star-Beacon reports that Million apologized during the hearing Wednesday and said he took the plea with the families in mind.

Prosecutors said the child suffered fatal blunt force injuries in February. They don’t know exactly how the injuries were inflicted.
