5K run supports local police officers

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Hundreds turned out Sunday in Youngstown for a 5K run that supports local police officers and their families.

The day was put on by the Pittsburgh-based Officers Down 5K Foundation, which organizes Fun Runs across the country to raise money for local police when an officer is killed or wounded in the line of duty.

A portion of the proceeds from Sunday’s event go to the Youngstown FOP Lodge 28 Fallen Officers Memorial.

“Anyone who chooses to donate, we hold that money and if there is a fallen officer, rather in the area, if someone reaches out to us, then we in turn benefit them,” Danielle Getty of the Officers Down 5K Foundation.

Getty added that about 300 people turned our for the event. She expects to draw about 500 next year.
