YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Candidates have been named in the search to replace Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge James Evans, who is retiring Sept. 1.

The Mahoning County Republican Party announced the candidates as potential interim judges to fill out Evans’ term until a winner is decided in the November election.

The candidates are:

  • Anthony D’Apolito of Poland, Mahoning County magistrate
  • Robert Andrews of Boardman, Mahoning County assistant prosecutor
  • Wade Doerr of New Middletown, attorney
  • Shirley Christian of New Springfield, attorney

All four applicants will meet with a screening committee next week. Up to three names will forwarded on to Ohio Gov. John Kasich for appointment.

Just last month, Kasich appointed another judge in the Mahoning County court system. Canfield attorney Robert Rusu will replace Judge Mark Belinky as Mahoning County Probate Judge until February.

Rusu will serve as judge until he is replaced by the winner of the November election in the Mahoning County Probate Court Judge race. Rusu could win that race as well, as he has filed to run as an independent.

Kasich said Rusu’s appointment will begin July 8.
