Local union gets training grant

Plumbers and Pipefitters get training grant

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Tuesday was certainly a rewarding day for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 396.

The union received a $150,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Jason Wilson is the director of the Governor’s Office of Appalachia.

Also present at Tuesday’s presentation were U.S. Congressmen Bill Johnson, R-Marietta, and Tim Ryan, D-Niles.

Money from the grant will be used to train a new class of apprentices and displaced welders in pipeline construction and downhill welding techniques.

“The potential is here. We have to develop the infrastructure to get some of the oil and gas going and get the educated workforce to stay in this Valley and then we can continue. It looks like 2015 is going to be a banner year for this area, so we are excited about it,” said Marty Loney, training director for Local 396.

After the presentations, the ceremony wrapped up with a congratulatory pipe-cutting.
