CELINA, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say a 76-year-old woman fell asleep behind the wheel in the middle of the day and drove into a western Ohio lake, where she became stranded on the roof of her car and was rescued with help from an Indiana teenager.
The Lima News reports the Rockford woman fell asleep before missing a curve in the road and crossing a concrete rubble barrier into Grand Lake St. Marys. The car drifted a bit and then sank a few yards offshore. The woman wasn’t hurt and was able to exit the car.
A 15-year-old boy from nearby Portland, Indiana, witnessed the scene and swam out to give her a life jacket. The fire department eventually rescued her by boat.
It wasn’t clear why the woman fell asleep.
