Lake Erie tourist spot’s dock overhaul nearly done

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (AP) – A $5.6 million overhaul of two main docks at an Ohio tourist spot along Lake Erie is mostly finished in time for Fourth of July and midsummer boating.

The Blade in Toledo reports the village of Put-in-Bay started the project in December and hoped to finish before South Bass Island’s tourist season began in late May. Winter weather delayed that timeline.

Village councilman Jeff Koehler says the docks built in the 1930s had been maintained only lightly since a major construction project in the 1970s. He says they were “falling into the lake” before the overhaul.

When it’s complete, the marina is expected to have new water, electric and docking structures that should last a century.

Area restaurants owners say the construction was necessary but cost them business.
