Scrappers streak halted, fall to Batavia

Niles, Ohio (WKBN)- The Batavia Muckdogs put an end to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers two-game winning streak Friday, beating the Scrappers 3-1.

The Scrappers were able to strike first, after a Yonathan Mendoza walk to start the bottom of the first. Steven Patterson put one inside the first base bag, which allowed Mendoza to score from first.

Offense was few and far between for both teams early. The Scrappers got a great start out of Julian Merryweather, who did not allow a hit until the third when Mason Davis doubled to right. Merryweather then balked, allowing Davis to get to third who then scored on a RBI ground out by Brain Anderson. Merryweather went 5, allowed only 1 hit, 1 run, while striking out 4.

Batavia’s pitching was just a bit better. Combined, the staff only allowed 3 hits with 9 strikeouts.

The Muckdogs were able to take the lead in the 7th, when Aaron Blanton singled to left allowing Miles Williams to score the go ahead run making it 2-1.

They would add on an insurance run in the 8th off a sac fly.

The two teams battle again Saturday at Eastwood Field at 7:05.
