Ox Roast provides more than entertainment

MESPOTAMIA, Ohio (WKBN)– This weekend the Mesopotamia Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its 41st annual Ox Roast.

First News Reporter Nadine Grimley was there to see just how many people turned out to grab a bite while supporting their community.

Six thousand pounds of meat and 15,000 sandwiches make for one of the most popular roasts in the area.

“I love the Roast Beef,” said William Shockey, of Champion.

“The food is so good. It’s delicious, I love it,” said Michaela Cavalcanti, of New Springfield.

For over 41 years, the three-day event is how the Mesopotamia Volunteer Fire Department brings in cash to buy equipment without asking for more money from taxpayers.

Just yesterday, the fire department brought in about $30,000 dollars from the roast, and the lines show they’re on track to raise the same if not more on Saturday.

“On average we gross $90,000. The last couple of years we’ve had some record-breaking years,” said Chief Joseph Pavlic, Mespotamia Volunteer Fire Department.

“It just shows that you support them when they’re going to help you, you’re just benefiting them in the long run,” said Bill Lenney of Bristol.

“You can see the community really supports us. It is all volunteer help that comes here for all three days and it is really a community effort,” said Pavlic.

Pavlic says all the vehicles the fire department has purchased were with money they raised during the Ox Roast.
