Scrappers swept by Batavia

Niles, OH (WKBN)- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers came into Sunday afternoon’s game looking to avoid a three game sweep at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs. Despite scoring three runs on five hits, the Scrappers surrendered a two out, two run double in the top of the 9th inning to fall 5-3, being swept at home by Batavia for the second time this season.



The Scrappers grabbed the early lead in the 3rd inning, Greg Allen singled with two outs, then promptly stole both second and third. The throw to third base was misplayed by Hiram Martinez, allowing Allen to score the first run of the game.

After Batavia tied the game with a run in the top of the 6th, Allen struck again. A leadoff walk would put him at first. Allen then stole second base, his third steal of the game. Austin Fisher would then move Allen to third on a groundout. One pitch later Allen would score the go ahead run again, this time on a wild pitch.

The game stayed tied until the top of the 7th inning when the Muckdogs would score two runs on a Martinez single.

Mahoning Valley then tied the game up again in the bottom of the 8th inning. With one out, Ordomar Valdez doubled to leftfield, then Allen followed by delivering with his bat. A single to right field would drive in Valdez to tie the game at three.

The Muckdogs took the lead for good in the top of the 9th. With two outs and two runners on base, Wildert Pujols doubled to left field score both runners and push the score out to the final of 5-3.

Sean Brady started for the Scrappers and delivered another quality outing. He went 6 innings and allowed just 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 3 while only walking 1. Justin Garcia followed in relief. Garcia allowed his first 2 runs of the season on 3 hits in 2 innings of relief. Garcia walked 1 and struck out 1. Luke Eubank (0-1) pitched the 9th. Eubank allowed 2 runs on 2 hits. He struck out 1 and did not walk anyone in taking the loss.

The Scrappers will now host the Williamsport Crosscutters for a two game series starting Monday night at 7:05.
