Year in Review: Greenville finished with the program’s first undefeated regular season since 1999 last fall. In week two, the Trojans registered their signature win as they edged Hickory by one point (22-21). Their season came to an end prematurely as they fell in the District Semifinal to Girard (16-14).

Coach Brian Herrick’s group will be without their quarterback Matt Jones, top two rushers (Trey Vanaken & Tyler Fattman) as well as their gifted receiver Luke Houpt on offense. Jones, in his first year as the team’s starter, threw for 1163 yards and 14 touchdowns. Vanaken (Hillsdale College) and Fattman ran for a combined total of 1381 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. Fattman ended his scholastic career with 1765 rushing yards (12 TDs). Houpt (Gannon University) caught 17 passes or more throughout his four years on Greenville’s varsity roster. He finished with 106 catches, 1565 yards, and 21 grabs for a touchdown.

Greenville begins their trek back to the playoffs with a road contest at North East on Friday, August 29. The Trojans return 5 starters on offense and 6 on defense with a roster filled with 55 players in all.

3 Things to Watch in Greenville
New era for the offense.
Of the 151 passes which were thrown by Trojans last year, only 2 of them were tossed by an underclassman. Junior Gage Gladysz completed both passes for 27 yards and a score. Senior Nick Black scored the most rushing touchdowns (14) in a single season since RJ Malson in 2009 (19). Black returns after gaining 504 yards on 107 carries (4.7 ypc) last fall. Senior Andy Jones hauled in 9 passes for 308 yards for a ridiculous 34.2 yard-per-catch average (2 TDs) in 2013.

Zach Miller leads the defense.
Senior linebacker Zach Miller has led the Trojans’ in tackles in each of the last two years. Miller stopped 139 ball carriers as a sophomore and 112 as a junior. He also intercepted a pair of passes and sacked the quarterback 5.5 times. Cornerback Devin Sulick (63 tackles) and linebackers Nick Black (3 sacks) and Andy Jones (45 tackles) also will be back to lead the defensive unit. Defensive end Alex Gentile has totaled 132 tackles in the last two years. Greenville, as always, will be in their 4-4 alignment.

Scoring ranked high.
After tallying the 20th best scoring offense in the area (29.0) and a defensive group that finished 4th (12.8), it may be difficult to get back to that same level on both sides of the ball.
