Niles, OH (WKBN)- Fresh off his appearance in the College World series, Indians first round pick Mike Papi officially reported to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Tuesday.
Papi, 21, signed with Cleveland last Thursday, with a 1.25 million dollar signing bonus. The 38th overall pick will also receive 30 thousand dollars to finish his education. Papi helped the University of Virginia reach the finals of the NCAA tournament by hitting .307, with 55 runs, and 56 RBI. The Cavaliers eventually fell to Vanderbilt, 2 games to 1, in the finals. Papi was a junior with the team, but opted to jumpstart his professional career.
“I think I can bring a lot of consistency to the club,” said Papi. “And go up there and hit for average and produce and play hard every day. And come and give a hundred percent and play solid defense. I do not know a lot about Youngstown but I am extremely excited to be here and to play here.”
