Year in Review: Wilmington started the season with a 5-2 mark, which included three shut outs, and looked destined for another playoff run. However, the Greyhounds lost their last two games to Sharon (35-21) and to Greenville, 41-21, and missed the post-season for the first time since 2004. The ‘Hounds allowed 76 points to be scored in their first seven games but permitted exactly that same amount in their final two.
Wilmington’s defense permitted a 16.9 point per game average last season. An impressive number but it ended the Greyhounds’ eight-year run in the top ten among area teams in points allowed. Still, Wilmington has not allowed their opposition to average 18-points or more in twelve years (2002: 21.8).
The Greyhounds will enter the 2014 season in Class A, not Double-A. Wilmington and Reynolds will both make the transition to take on the likes of West Middlesex, Lakeview, Farrell, and Sharpsville in league play. Wilmington will still face off against some powerhouses from Class AA in Slippery Rock, Hickory and Grove City. The season begins on Friday, August 29 when they’ll travel to face the Eagles at 7 PM.
