Summer camp focuses on engineering

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Kids from around the Valley set sail Monday on a week-long engineering course.

It’s called the Summer Manufacturing Institute and is put on by the Oh Wow! Children’s Center for Science and Technology and the YWCA of Youngstown. Throughout the week, approximately 20 students in grades 4 through 6 are learning about the manufacturing process first-hand.

On Monday, the group tested kayaks at Youngstown State University. The practice will serve them well the rest of the week.

“They are getting a feel for how the boat is built. They have learned a little bit about the engineering of boats. And then we are going to start building our own boats tomorrow,” Oh Wow! education manager Audra Carlson said.

The week of testing and building culminates on Friday when the students will test their creations on the water.
