Fire claims life of elderly woman in Warren

Warren, Ohio (WKBN) – An elderly woman died in a house fire in Warren late Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to a home at 949 Columbia Place around 11:53 a.m. where they found a fire contained to the basement of the house.

Crews found the body of Loan Vang, 79, lying on the basement floor.

Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle said he believes Vang was alerted by the smoke detectors in her house and went to the basement to investigate when she became overcome with smoke.

Nussle said Vang was a recipient of the city’s smoke detector giveaway and she had working detectors on every level of the two-story home.

“She could barely walk or see with her knees, but she would cook and bring it all the way down to my house,” said neighbor Kelli Stahl. “She was always giving and the nicest person you could ask for.”

The fire was contained to a laundry area. Clothing and a table were burned and there was some structural damage to the basement of the house.

A cause has not been determined. The State Fire Marshal is investigating.
