Austintown schools to consider drug testing for student drivers

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Another Valley school district is considering drug testing for student drivers.

The Austintown School Board heard a proposal Tuesday from Superintendent Vincent Colaluca recommending a random drug testing policy be used for all students that want to park on the school property.

Colaluca said the district takes a firm stance against drug use and is a leader in the area with drug testing, implementing it for athletes in the 90s.

“It is something we feel being very proactive helps our community, helps our kids make wise choices,” Colaluca said. “One of the things we’ve talked to our board about is expanding our drug testing to anyone, any student at the high school that needs a permit to park.”

The school issues about 300 parking permits each year.

Other school districts including Crestview, Struthers and Boardman have adopted similar policies.
