Duplex destroyed in Newton Falls fire

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio (WKBN) –  An air conditioning unit may have started a fire that destroyed a duplex in Newton Falls Tuesday afternoon.

The duplex was on Trumbull Court. A teenager was left alone while the mom, boyfriend and a young child went shopping, according to Newton Falls Fire Chief Richard Bauman.

When the teen realized the apartment was on fire, she jumped out of the window. The fire chief said the apartment had an old-style window air conditioning unit and that may have started the fire.

The apartment next door also was damaged. No one was injured.
