Explosion at Youngstown salvage yard injures one

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – An explosion at a Trumbull County salvage yard Tuesday morning sent an employee to the hospital.

It took Liberty emergency crews only a matter of minutes to respond to Cleveland Auto Wrecking on Youngstown-Hubbard Road. Firefighter and paramedic Justin Graham said the employee was trying to cut open an oxygen tank when it blew up.

“I don’t know if they didn’t know if it still had oxygen in it or not, but they cut it with a shear and it caused a pretty large explosion and he had some pretty traumatic injuries to his left arm,” Graham said.

Usually the stem of the tank is removed before the tanks are cut open, but the stem on the tank the man was cutting into was still attached. Graham said oxygen tanks are very dangerous around any kind of open flame.

“Luckily, he wasn’t using a torch. It was a shear press and it just came down and the pressure of that caused the bottle to completely come apart,” said Graham said.

The name of the employee who was injured or his condition has not been released.
