Garden center replaces vandalized trees

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Petitti Garden Center has donated 29 trees to the Inner City Garden on Hillman Street in Youngstown.

Someone cut down more than half of the trees in the garden between Sunday night and Monday morning. The garden helps to feed disadvantaged residents in the neighborhood. Volunteers planted the trees in April.

Pat Voeks, the manager of Petitti Garden Center, dropped off the 29 fruit trees, including apple, peach and pear, to the food forest on Hillman Street Wednesday afternoon.

“We try and support all of the urban farms in the area and when I heard they got vandalized the other night, I immediately wanted to do something,” Voeks said.

Organizers of the Youngstown Inner City Garden and volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday. to plant the trees.  The group is still looking for concrete and fencing.
