Giant Eagle offering free blood pressure medicine

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – High blood pressure affects one in three American adults.

That is why Giant Eagle pharmacies are now giving away two medications to treat the condition.

Customers who qualify can get prescriptions up to 90 tablets of Lisinopril or Lisinopril HCTZ for free at all 215 locations in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia. Customers can download the Giant Eagle Pharmacy app to refill prescriptions on their phone.

Blood pressure kiosks also are available at every location.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in three American adults, representing 67 million people, has hypertension or high blood pressure, and fewer than half of those adults have it under control. Those with high blood pressure often face serious cardiovascular problems such as stroke, heart attack or heart failure.

Giant Eagle was one of the pharmacies 27 Investigates recently price-checked as part of a prescription drug survey. WKBN 27 First News anchor Erika Thomas asked about 14 dosages of brand-name medications.

Here is what she found at the store on Center Road in Poland: It had the most expensive price for Crestor at $239.99, which is $45 more than its cheapest competitor. It had the least expensive price for Advair at $147.99, a savings of $210, and Cymbalta at $167.99, a savings of $125.
