HOWLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Howland School District Superintendent John Sheets will be retiring after a 35-year career in education.
Sheets’ resignation was announced Monday night at a school board meeting. His last day on the job will be December 31..
Sheets has served as Howland’s superintendent since August 2007.
Whoever becomes the next superintendent will face financial challenges in the district. In May, Howland voters defeated a 3.9-mill additional levy to upgrade classroom technology and security systems, as well as provide all-day kindergarten.
School officials said at the time that a defeat would mean staffing layoffs and service cutbacks.
The levy would have cost an additional $135 per year for every $100,000 of home valuation. It had been 11 years since the district has sought additional funds.
