Commissioners demand more information on board hires

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Two county boards have come under fire lately for making drastic changes without informing Mahoning County Commissioners.

The Western Reserve Port Authority and the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) both have leadership positions open. Commissioners say now is the time that communication between the commissioners and the boards is critical, but that hasn’t happened.

“They were going to do some major changes to the administrative area of the Western Reserve Port Authority, and we were not informed nor were some of the board members,” said Mahoning County Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti.

Commissioners said they had to attend public meetings to find out what was going on.

“From this day forward, we are going to start to get interviews, get suggestions, sit as a group, and look at our board members,” Rimedio-Righetti said.

Neither the port authority nor the MCBDD has announced a decision on their plans to fill their positions. The port authority is looking for a new director and MCBDD needs to hire a superintendent.

Commissioners appointed Bob Gavalier, Laura Lyden and Rocco DeGenero to the Mahoning County Board of Mental Health Thursday. Commissioners say the new members will know exactly what is expected of them.
