Senior fair offers information and fun

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Senior citizens in the Valley had the opportunity Saturday to socialize and learn about different programs available to them all in one place. It’s called the Mahoning County Senior Fair and it started in 2007.

Erla Shannon is one of hundreds of seniors who attended the 6th Annual Mahoning County Senior Fair at Emmanuel Community Church in Canfield. She said she and her friends like to get out and do something and this is a good way to do just that.

“I for one have no idea about any of this stuff, and if we didn’t come to these places, we’d never know,” Shannon said.

And that’s the whole point of the event, to teach folks about services in our area that directly impact them. Gary Kommel, commander of the American Legion, said the seniors go from booth to booth and look at the displays from the different services that are available.

“It is more compact and that way it is easier for them to acquire the information they need,” Kommel said.

The fair was hosted by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and was free. Sheriff Jerry Greene said more folks showed up this time around than in the past. He plans to keep making it bigger and better with each year.

“This is very important to our community. The seniors are here. They are our history, and they are paving the way for our future,” Greene said. “We need to be here to support them as well.”
