Teens spruce up portion of South Avenue

Youngstown cleanup

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Trees and fresh mulch are the newest additions to an empty lot on South Avenue in Youngstown.

About 40 teens from around Northeast Ohio spent Saturday sprucing up the area. It is part of project grow, a catholic diocese program.

A $39,000 grant from the Catholic Extension Society is covering the expenses to beautify 14 properties.

“There are 17,000 cars a day that go past here and if we can make it a nicer place to drive through, where people would maybe slow down for the businesses that helps the residents too and brings a little more life back to the neighborhood,” said Father Edward Brienz, with the Diocese of Youngstown.

Teenagers taking part in the project said they were happy to help out even the ones who don’t live in Youngstown.
