Aqua Ohio prepared for water disaster

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – In light of a massive water contamination situation in Toledo, our station wanted to know how local companies make sure the water is safe to drink.

Aqua Ohio’s Struthers division has 19,000 customers in the Mahoning Valley, which translates to approximately 54,000 people. Company officials said with their local knowledge, resources and state-of-the-art labs, they are prepared to handle just about anything.

Albert Sauline, area manager for the Struthers division of Aqua Ohio, said the company continuously monitors the water treatment process to make sure what goes out to its customers meets all standards.

“Obviously, you can never assure someone that an accident is not going to happen. You can just take every possible precaution you can and we can assure people that we are doing that,” Sauline said.

Sauline said they are prepared to handle anything that may contaminate their water supply and they are taking precautionary measures to protect it. That includes monitoring the areas surrounding the water source.

Lake Evans is one of the water supplies for residents in six townships, two villages and one city. It includes Poland, Boardman and New Middletown.

Sauline said the company is working with the people who live around the water, contractors building new homes and the farmer across the street to make sure that everyone is taking the necessary steps to keep protect the drinking water supply.

“Just remember when you put a fertilizer on your yard to grow the growth that is there, if it runs off to our lakes, it is going to start algae blooms,” Sauline said.

In addition, the trees and brush around Lake Evans actually help protect the water. The company also puts out a consumer confidence report each year.
