Sinkhole swallows car in Pittsburgh area

Pittsburgh sinkhole

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WKBN) – A sudden sinkhole has swallowed a car that was in the parking lot of a Pittsburgh-area tanning salon.

The owner of the business helped rescue the driver, but the entire car vanished underwater within minutes.

“I called Lisa at the tanning salon and said ‘help, look outside the window.’ And she came outside and was able to help me climb out the driver’s side window because I couldn’t get the driver’s side door open. And we sat and watched my car go deeper and deeper. Now, you can’t see it. It is gone,” driver Natalie Huddleston said.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. Tuesday at a tanning salon in Ross Township. Emergency crews have shut down southbound portions of McKnight road, a busy area full of malls and other businesses.

The Hollywood Tans business was evacuated, but no injuries were reported. Work crews say a 60-inch storm drain runoff pipe collapsed during heavy rains, causing the sinkhole.
