Beware of fake jury duty caller

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A warning has been issued for anyone getting a phone call asking for personal information by someone claiming to be the Mahoning County Sheriff.

Deputies said they have been getting complaints recently from residents who took calls telling them they had either missed being summoned for jury duty or that arrest warrants had been issued for them.

Jeff Allen with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office said the callers can be intimidating and demand the information.

“They try to obtain either personal information or payment information from you. The Sheriff’s Office will never contact anybody for personal information or payment information over the phone. That will not happen,” Allen said.

Authorities believe the calls are being made by internet hackers from overseas.

Allen said to simply hang up on the caller.
