YPD: Pre-arranged fight led to shooting death

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown police are investigating a shooting death Sunday evening on the city’s south side.

Police confirmed that Shawn Cortez, 17, died around 6 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Winona Drive off Glenwood Avenue. Police said Cortez got into a fight with a group of other teens when guns were pulled.

The teen was rushed to St. Elizabeth Health Center in a private vehicle, but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Several shell casings were visible on the street.

According to a YPD detective, the shooting stemmed from a pre-arranged fight. YPD detectives said Monday that an altercation at a house party the night before led to the fight, which involved around 30 people.

Police said that multiple guns were used in the incident and multiple shots were fired. Cortez died of a single shot to the chest, according to detectives.

One detective said the gun used to kill Cortez has not been found as of Monday morning.

Police do not have a suspect in the case yet.

Cortez’s second cousin said he was a quiet kid who went to East High School, liked cornhole and went to church.

“It’s a shock. You become numb. It’s a tragedy that he was so young and the way the violence goes, it’s a tragedy,” Dana Mercado said. “I’m just sorry. I feel bad that it happened and hopefully justice is served and he can rest in peace. And we can all be together as a family and get through this together.”

Detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward.
