YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – An annual conference on the natural gas industry will not be returning to Youngstown.
The Regional Chamber has canceled the YOUNG 2014 conference due to oil and gas companies moving some operations out of the area. This would have been the fourth year for the conference.
“Canceling an event of this magnitude was certainly not a decision that we made quickly or easily,” said Kim Calvert, vice president of Marketing & Business Services. “The Chamber had expected the YOUNG Conference & Trade Show, initially held in 2011 to educate the public and business about the burgeoning shale industry in the Valley, to have a life cycle of three to four years.”
Calvert said they started seeing a decline in participation for the show, primarily due to the changing nature of the shale industry in the region. She said some companies are moving to other shale-rich areas and there have been other industry delays.
Over the years, the event drew hundreds of business and thousands of people to the Covelli Centre to share information on the Marcellus and Utica shale industry.
Calvert said despite the changes, the industry remains strong in the Mahoning Valley.
