Embattled Girard officer resigns

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – A Girard police officer who has a history of trouble has resigned.

It is unknown what led to Larry Neely’s resignation, but Girard Mayor Jim Melfi said Neely stated it was for “personal reasons.”

In March, Neely was given a 20-day unpaid suspension after an investigation revealed his stepson was hosting underage drinking parties at Neely’s house and the officer admitted he knew about them. The suspension was part of a “last chance” provision in the city’s conduct code.

Neely’s house was raided by Girard police after numerous complaints were received from neighbors about the parties. Neely was cleared of criminal charges in the case.
