Poland residents frustrated over home’s condition

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – A rundown property in Poland Village continues to frustrate neighbors.

The home along Poland Manor was bought in 2009 by the current owner. Bret Barnhizer has taken out permits to fix it up, but people living in the neighborhood struggle to understand what is taking so long.

On Tuesday, a group of 50 people voiced their concerns at the Village Council meeting. They want help making the homeowner finish the job or give up the home.

“If we could see a little old man pounding a nail, we would be encouraged,” resident Jenny Phillips said.

But Poland Village Solicitor Anthony D’Apolito said there is not much village officials can do.

“The tools of law director and the solicitor are only the laws. The laws allow us to prevent people from doing what they should not do. But they don’t allow to make people do what they should do, which is fix up their homes,” D’Apolito said.

The matter is making its way through the courts as well because Barnhizer faces a potential penalty for not fixing up the property.
