Pa. man captured after 2 years on lam

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – After two years on the run, a Pennsylvania man is at the Trumbull County Jail on several theft charges.

Gabriel Steven Bonish, 43, of Georgetown, Pa., was arraigned Wednesday morning and is being held on a $250,000 bond pending his arraignment Aug. 27. He was secretly indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury on five counts of grand theft and one count of felony theft.

Bonish faces similar charges in several states, including Pennsylvania. Authorities said Bonish would rent heavy equipment from businesses, sell it for pennies on the dollar and then leave town.

Bonish is accused of taking more than $1 million total. Locally, police estimated he stole $60,000 worth of equipment. The local charges date back to December of 2011 and January of 2012, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors said the case is similar to the 2002 movie “Catch Me if You Can” in which Leonardo DiCaprio starred as conman Frank Abagnale, who stole millions of dollars by posing as various professionals, including a pilot, a prosecutor and a doctor.
