YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Six new Ford Explorers soon will hit the streets with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, and they did not cost taxpayers a dime.
The six new cruisers will be fully equipped and have four-wheel drive for winter. The total purchase cost would have been $190,000.
Fees paid by a telephone company to the sheriff’s department are making the purchase possible.
“We are looking at the safety of the police officers in the vehicle itself. The Fords were determined to have more width and room for the officer. And one of the important parts of patrol is the police officer has to have the ability to draw his revolver from within the vehicle,” Mahoning County Commissioner David Ditzler said.
The sheriff replaces a handful of old cruisers each year. Some of the cars have 170,000 miles.
