Former Austintown, Notre Dame RB enrolled at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown State University Sports Information Director Trevor Parks confirmed Tuesday that former Austintown Fitch standout and Notre Dame running back Will Mahone is enrolled at Youngstown State University and on the YSU football team as a walk-on.

Parks said Mahone has not practiced yet and Penguins head coach Eric Wolford said Mahone is ineligible to play this year.

“I investigated the situation in a lot of different ways, and he is going to walk on our football team and he is going to earn his way. He knows he’s got some work to do and some things to get straightened away. We are excited to have him as part of our team and just bring him into our program and wrap our arms around him and give a local guy a chance,” Wolford said.

Austintown police arrested Mahone early on the morning of June 15, saying he assaulted a police officer and threatened to kill the officers after he was released from jail.

Mahone pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor charges and received a 10-day jail sentence July 23.

YSU opens its season Saturday against Illinois.
