GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – A spaghetti dinner set for Sept. 20 will raise money for longtime WKBN Meteorologist Don Guthrie in his battle against pancreatic cancer.
The dinner, originally organized by co-workers of Don’s wife Debbie, will be held at the Italian Fraternal Home in Girard, located at 33 W. Wilson Ave. and will last from 4 until 9 p.m.
Tickets to the event cost $10 per person, while those under 3 get in free.
The event also will include a 50-50 raffle and live music.
Those interested can call 330-233-5087 or 330-519-3043 to order tickets and get more information.
At least $10,000 of the proceeds from the event will be donated to create a scholarship in Don’s name for a future communications student at Youngstown State University.
Part of the proceeds will also be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, according to Debbie, who said that two percent of the money donated to the American Cancer Society goes to fight pancreatic cancer.
“When this first came up, I said, ‘We’re not doing anything unless we can give something back to the community,'” Debbie said.
Debbie Guthrie also noted that some of the funds raised will go towards expenses incurred by Don’s cancer, including special shakes for Don and alternative treatments not covered by insurance.
The family has greatly appreciated the support received from the community, according to Debbie.
“We cry almost every day from just the kindness from people,” Debbie said. “It’s been incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more loved.”
Debbie Guthrie also said that those interested can donate to the cause at any Huntington Bank branch.
