School year begins; Yo. district on academic watch

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – School cafeterias are buzzing right now, many for the first time in several months, as school started in several valley districts Tuesday morning.

Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Sebring, Struthers and Youngstown all started a new school year today.

Youngstown City Schools Superintendent Dr. Connie Hathorn said that while the district remains in “academic watch,” there is evidence of major academic improvement in the most of the schools.

Dr. Hathorn attributes the progress to the new curriculum plan called “One Plan,” which he said helps students learn better and allows for more hands-on training for teachers and administrators.
