Fans dash for spirit wear ahead of Poland-Hubbard matchup

HUBBARD, Ohio (WKBN) – It doesn’t take a genius to recognize Fridays in the fall are synonymous with high school football in this neck of the woods. But when you have two undefeated teams meeting each other a month into the season, the excitement is palpable.

Ray Fox at Eagle Wear in Hubbard said the game this weekend pitting the Hubbard Eagles against the Poland Bulldogs means more than just a growing rivalry between the two schools; it also helps the store’s bottom line through sales of spirit wear like shirts and hats.

“Everybody jumps on the bandwagon. It is amazing what goes on in this store,” said Fox.

A few miles away in Poland, sales at Trolio’s Sportswear have also been brisk for both Bulldog apparel and tickets to the game itself.

“They are definitely right when they say it is going to be a record-breaking crowd,” said Sherry Trolio-DiVito. “By Tuesday, I had already sold more tickets than I did for all of last week’s game.”

While stores like these sell a wide variety of silk-screened and embroidered items, the local schools are always in demand this time of year.

“It is a lot of fun. We meet a lot of people. Football’s the biggest,” said Fox.

Trolio-DiVito agrees saying the rivalry is a great boost for business for both sides, which is good when you are trying not to be too partial.

“My kids go to Poland and I went to Hubbard, so I guess I can root for both,” said Abbey Argiro of Poland. “I guess I am going to have to root for Poland.”

The Poland v. Hubbard game kicks off Friday night at 7 p.m. at Poland Seminary High School.
