Hundreds take strides for ALS

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – A record number of people also showed up to walk at Eastwood Field in support of the ALS Association.

Mary Wheelock said this summer’s viral sensation known as the “Ice Bucket Challenge” helped raise more awareness.

“Just a couple of years ago if you asked a person if they knew what ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, one out of every two did not know, so 50 percent of the general public,” said Wheelock.

Wheelock said they surpassed their goal of $25,000 and brought in more than $43,000 to put towards research and finding a cure.

More than 500 people participated in Sunday’s walk.
