YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Valley residents will be dealing with snow and ice soon, and Mahoning County road crews are preparing to deal with the wintry weather.
Commissioners gave approval to the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office for $200,000 in materials to help keep the roads clear this winter.
They will purchase $100,000 in beet juice to mix with rock salt for treatment and $100,000 in slag as an alternative for snow and ice removal.
County Engineer Pat Ginnetti also is looking into asking the state for money in case of an emergency. Commissioner David Ditzler said those funds would come from the state’s rainy day fund.
Ginnetti said the cost of rock salt is four times higher than last year.
