Police say man tried to take officer’s gun at Covelli Centre

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown police arrested a man at the Covelli Centre Saturday night after police say he attempted to take an officer’s weapon.

According to a police report, Michael Merzlak, 27, approached a police officer about 6:40 p.m. near the general admission area of the facility and tugged on the officer’s service revolver.

The officer protected his weapon and apprehended Merzlak and escorted him from the facility.

During questioning, Merzlak kept saying, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it,” according to the report.

Merzlak was arrested without further incident and taken to the Mahoning County Jail where he is charged with aggravated robbery.
