Phone sex number mistakenly sent to Niles gas customers

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Carol Kauffman and her husband are two of 1,900 homeowners in Niles who received a letter from Direct Energy, asking them to call to find out what options they have when it comes to a lower fixed rate for gas.

“I got the letter and I told him to call and he did and he started laughing and he came over and he said ‘they said hi honey what are you wearing?’ and I said ‘No, you got the wrong number.’ So he called it back and that is what they said,” Carol Kauffman said.

We played the phone recording for Kirsten McCartny, who received the letter, but had not called the number yet.

“I wish I would have called that because I would have laughed so hard. That is awesome,” McCartny said.

A spokesperson for Direct Energy said the letter was real, but the phone number was off by one digit. When they were alerted to the error by a customer, they immediately took action by alerting the city of Niles and drafting a new letter.

“We immediately drafted another letter to folks in Niles who got the original letter. They should have sent out that out and received that if not earlier this week than today, hopefully, with the correct number and an apology for any inconvenience this may have caused,” Micah Hirschfield of Direct Energy said.

Anyone who accidentally made the call should not see any unexpected charges on their phone bill, Direct Energy said.
