Feds charge man in fake pipe bomb case

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The man accused of threatening to blow up Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Dave Betras has now been charged federally.

Charles Reighard was arrested last week and charged with extortion, retaliation and aggravated menacing after police say he tossed what was meant to look like a pipe bomb through the window of Betras’ law offices in Canfield.

The federal extortion charge involves threats made to kill someone through the U.S. mail.

Reighard was being held on a $2 million bond, but after his appearance in federal court on Wednesday, a judge ordered that he be held without bond pending a detention hearing on Monday.
