MAHONING CO., Ohio (WKBN) – Republican challenger Ralph Meacham beat out incumbent Michael Sciortino Tuesday in a race for the Mahoning County Auditor’s position.
Meacham received 52% of the votes, while Sciortino got 48%.
After being indicted on 16 felony counts for what prosecutors are calling corruption while in office, Sciortino decided to run for re-election.
Sciortino, a Democrat, pleaded not guilty to the charges on May 29.
Sciortino is accused of lying during a lawsuit to keep the county’s $480,000 rent going to the Ohio Valley Mall, which was owned by the Cafaro Company, among other charges.
Running opposite Sciortino was Meacham, from Lake Milton.
Meacham had been criticized for what Sciortino called a violation of election laws, when the marketing firm running his campaign, Rubenstein and Associates, sent emails with a pro-Meacham flyer to a mass list that included several county office-holders and employees.
