Bottom Dollar to sell stores to Aldi

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A grocery store chain with locations right here in the valley, all of which just opened within the last two years, will close up shop at the end of the year.

At the end of the year, three bottom dollar food locations in Youngstown will close.

“Their loss is going to be felt,” the Rev. Lewis Macklin said.

This comes as the store’s parent company, Delhaize Group, announced it is selling the locations on Midlothian Boulevard and Mahoning and Glenwood Avenues  to Aldi.

“From a personal viewpoint, (I’m) unhappy about it because 76 employees at three different stores are going to be losing their jobs at the end of the year,” Youngstown Mayor John McNally said.

In a release from Delhaize, officials said the stores will stay open through 2014, but after that, Bottom Dollar will close and retire its operations.

That’s bad news for folks in those surrounding neighborhoods, because once they close their doors, they will be left without nearby access to a grocery store.

“They were good neighbors, great products and services that they provided for area residents to address the food desert issue that had existed,” Macklin said.

Mayor John McNally said he has been speaking with the city’s law department, because he wants to re-gain control of the space on Glenwood and replace it.

“The preference is a grocery store,” McNally said. “We’ll work on that end, but we’re going to be contacting Bottom Dollar to try to make arrangements to get that property back.”

Bottom Dollar Food opened its first store in King of Prussia, Pa., on Oct. 8, 2010, and currently has 46 stores in greater Philadelphia, Pa., and 20 stores in greater Pittsburgh, Pa. with three stores in Youngstown, one in Warren and one in New Castle. Bottom Dollar currently employs about 2,200 associates.
